The Sister-In-Law Season 3 - Episode 21 – The Long Shadow
A year had passed. Daniel’s company, a subsidiary he’d renamed ‘Acheron Holdings,’ was thriving. He was a fixture in the city’s financial circles, his name often mentioned in the business section. He was a model of corporate success, but his life was a meticulously curated performance. Every decision, every acquisition, was run through a mental filter: How would Eleanor see this? He was a CEO, but he felt like a regional manager, forever answering to a silent, omniscient board.
The summons came, as it always did, via a sterile text from Eleanor’s assistant. Ms. Vance requests your presence. Friday. 4 PM. The estate. The estate. Not her office. She was pulling him back into the physical space of his defeat, a reminder of the house he’d won and the life he’d lost.
He drove up the long, winding driveway, the familiar knot of dread tightening in his gut. The house looked the same, a monument to cold perfection. Eleanor was waiting for him in the sunroom, a glass of iced tea in her hand. She was dressed in linen and pearls, the picture of effortless wealth.
“Daniel. Thank you for coming.” She gestured to the chair opposite her. “I have a proposition for you.”
“I’m listening,” he said, his voice neutral.
“As you know, the Vance Foundation’s most significant project is the new children’s hospital downtown. It’s my legacy.” She took a delicate sip of her tea. “The final, and most public, phase of the construction is the central atrium. A sculpture. I want you to oversee the project.”
Daniel narrowed his eyes. This was new. It was a high-profile project, but also a public-relations minefield. “Why me?”
“Because it requires a certain… ruthlessness,” she said, a thin smile on her lips. “The artist is difficult. The budget is tight. The timeline is absolute. I need someone who isn’t afraid to step on toes to get things done. I need someone I can trust to be my attack dog on a very short leash.” She slid a thick portfolio across the table. “All the details are in here. The artist’s name is Julian Croft. He’s brilliant, temperamental, and expects to be treated like a god. Your job is to remind him he’s just a contractor.”
He opened the portfolio. The first page was a bio of Julian Croft, followed by concept sketches for a massive, sprawling mobile of twisted steel and glass. It was audacious and beautiful. And at the bottom of the artist’s contact page, Daniel saw it. A familiar name, listed as his agent and manager. Sheila Vance.
His blood ran cold. Sheila. The ghost who had started it all. She hadn’t just disappeared; she had reinvented herself, lurking in the art world, a player in Eleanor’s game.
“Is there a problem?” Eleanor asked, her eyes sharp, watching his every micro-expression.
Daniel closed the portfolio. “No problem at all,” he said, his voice a low, even rumble. “Consider it done.”
He stood to leave, his mind racing. This wasn’t a proposition. It was a test. Or a trap. Eleanor was putting him in direct conflict with the one woman who had ever truly outplayed him. She was setting her two most dangerous creations against each other, just to see what would happen. As he walked to his car, his phone buzzed. An unknown number. The message was short.
Welcome to the game, darling. It’s been too long. - S
The game has changed. Daniel is no longer just a pawn in Eleanor’s world; he’s a player on a new board, and his first opponent is the ghost who started it all. Can he handle a war on two fronts, or has Eleanor just found a way to destroy them both?
