The Sister-In-Law Season 2 - Episode 9 – The Price
The first scene was a phone call. Daniel stood in his kitchen, the morning light feeling like an interrogation lamp. On the other end was Eleanor.
“Sheila used her inheritance to pay the PI,” Eleanor’s voice was a crisp, efficient whisper. “There’s a record. A wire transfer from her personal account to a shell corporation Davies uses. I have the account number. If it ‘leaks,’ it proves she premeditated this whole thing. It’s not about hurt feelings; it’s about a planned, financial attack.”
Daniel felt a surge of adrenaline. “How do I get it?”
“You don’t. I do,” she said. “I have a meeting with my banker this afternoon. But you need to keep Sheila busy. Distracted. Can you do that, Daniel?” The question was loaded with unspoken meaning.
“I’ll keep her occupied,” he promised.
The second scene was a performance. Daniel went to Sheila’s office, unannounced. He found her in a glass-walled conference room, presiding over a meeting like a queen on her throne. He didn’t wait to be announced. He opened the door and walked in.
Every head turned. Sheila’s face went from shock to fury. “Daniel, what in God’s name are you doing?”
“We need to talk,” he said, his voice loud enough for everyone to hear. He walked to the table, picked up a sheaf of papers, and looked at them as if considering them. “About these… terms.”
He saw the flicker of panic in her eyes. He was invading her territory, her sanctuary of power. He was turning her professional kingdom into his personal drama.
“Get out,” she seethed, standing up.
“Or what?” he challenged, stepping closer. “You’ll have me removed? You’ll call your pet detective? Go ahead. Let’s see how professional that looks.” He leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper meant only for her. “You wanted a war in the open, Sheila? Here we are.”
He held her gaze for a long, tense moment, then turned and walked out, leaving her to face the curious, whispering stares of her colleagues. He had given Eleanor her window.
The third scene was the payment. That night, Daniel’s phone buzzed. A text from Eleanor. Come to the house.
He found her in the dimly lit living room, a fire crackling in the hearth. She was wearing a dark silk robe, holding a crystal tumbler of whiskey. She looked like a queen herself, but of a much darker, older kingdom.
“It’s done,” she said, her voice smooth as velvet. “The information is on a flash drive. It’s on the table.” She gestured to a small USB drive lying next to an ornate silver box. “It’s all there. The transfer, the shell corporation, enough to crucify her in a divorce settlement.”
Daniel walked toward the table, his eyes on the drive. “What’s the catch?”
“There’s no catch,” Eleanor said, stepping into his path, her robe parting slightly. “There’s just… a toll.” She reached up, her hand cupping his cheek, her thumb stroking his jaw. Her touch was both a caress and a claim. “You used my daughter to get what you wanted. Now, you will use me to keep it.”
She leaned in, her lips brushing his, a soft, possessive kiss that tasted of whiskey and absolute power. “When this is over, Sheila will be gone. And you… you will be mine. The drive is your retainer. The kiss is your down payment.”
She stepped back, leaving him standing there, the flash drive in his hand and the taste of his new alliance on his lips.
Daniel has the weapon, but the price is steep. Has he traded one prison for another?
